Kevin Garnett is a free agent of interest to the San Antonio Spurs, the Express-Newsâ Buck Harvey reports. Garnettâs contract with the Boston Celtics is up as of July 1.
The breakup of the Celtics, as Sporting Newsâ Sean Deveney points out, is not necessarily fait accompli. Nevertheless, the feeling around the NBA is that the Boston roster will be shaken up this offseason and that Garnett and Ray Allenâ"both unrestricted free agentsâ"wonât be back. Thereâs even a sense of resignation in the locker room.

âHopefully management can do something to bring (Garnett) back, maybe add some pieces to this team that we need to get over the top,â Paul Pierce said after Bostonâs Game 7 loss to the Miami Heat Saturday night. âIf not, itâs been a tremendous run.â
Should Garnett decide to keep playingâ"he has hinted at retirementâ"heâll have plenty of suitors, especially in light of this seasonâs playoff excellence. He averaged 19.2 points and 10.4 rebounds this postseason.
Writes Harvey, âSome will have more money to offer than the Spurs will. Some might have more young talent to put around him. All the Spurs could give Garnett is the closest thing to what he had in Boston, a veteran core with a chance to contend.â
Garnett and Tim Duncan would make an interesting pairing, not only because they play similar roles on the court, but also because Duncan dislikes Garnett, and apparently, not just a little bit.
In his outstanding profile on Duncan in a recent issue of Sports Illustrated, Chris Ballard wrote, âDuncan hates Kevin Garnett. Hates him the way liberals hate Sean Hannity.â
