3. Miami Heat:
Perhaps Boston Celtics can have a better perspective on why Miami are on this list. Ever since the signing of Ray Allen, Miami Heat has taken a major leap towards supporting a formidable bench in the 2013 season. And that is not the only big name poised to warm the bench for Miami this season. Rashard Lewis, once he gets familiar to Miami’s pace, can be the perfect embodiment of ‘old is gold’.
Miami’s bench strength is also increases with the presence of Shane Battier, James Jones and Mike Miller in the mix. Though the centre and to an extent the point guard positions remain a source of concern for the side, given the options available are not that consistent, but Miami have slowly but surely built a formidable reserve line up.
2. Boston Celtics:
If it was last season, Boston Celtics would have been on the opposite side of the list. The story’s different this time round as Boston Celtics have included one of the perennial contenders for the sixth man of the year award in the shape of Jason Terry.
Courtney Lee and Avery Bradley make sure that the wing department is covered and the return of Jeff Green and Chris Wilcox is bound to add more flexibility to Doc River’s plan. The Celtics have also roped in two good rookies in Jared Sullinger and Fab Melo and as such their front court looks sensational.
While they might not do miracles, but the added strength to Boston’s bench ensures that the Eastern Conference will not be a walk in the park for Miami Heat.
1. San Antonio Spurs:
Manu Ginobili. Rings a bell?
He may not be ALL they have but the Spurs take a lot of inspiration and strength from his presence on the bench. Not many will disagree to the fact that San Antonio Spurs have the best bench in NBA today.
Stephen Jackson, Danny Green, Matt Bonner, DeJuan Blair and Boris Diaw can make up a starting lineup. And we are not done yet. Patty Mills is the perfect replacement to Tony Parker at the point guard position and if that is not enough then there is Gary Neal.
Much of Spurs’ success last season has been courtesy their bench strength which gives them the leverage to keep their trump cards like Parker, Ginobili and Tim Duncan fresh and healthy for the post season.
