It’s been quite an off season for Greg Rallo. First he and his wife welcomed their new baby into the world, and then the 6-foot forward from Gurnee, Illinois signed a new one-year, two-way contract with the Florida Panthers.
After spending two seasons and netting over 80 goals with the Springfield Jr. Blues in the North American Hockey League, Rallo played with the Ferris State University Bulldogs for the next 4 years. The marketing major appeared in 152 games for the Bulldogs, scoring 46 goals and picking up 62 assists along the way. He also picked up a number of honors during his time at FSU. Upon the completion of his 1st season with the Bulldogs in 2003, he was named Rookie of the Year after tallying 29 points in 41 games. During his senior season, Rallo was named the Bulldogs’ 2005-06 Central Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year in addition to being named the CCHA’s Offensive Player of the Week two times in the month of November. Greg joined the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL after his final season at Ferris State came to an end. He appeared in 7 games that season, and returned for 37 the next season before making his AHL debut for the Iowa Stars in 2006-07 season. While with the Stars he tallied 5 points in 28 games. He returned to the 2007 Kelly Cup Champion Steelheads for 39 games during the 2007-08 season before splitting the remainder of the season with the Albany River Rats, Rockford IceHogs, and Manitoba Moose of the AHL. He spent the next season exclusively with the Manitoba Moose making it to the Calder Cup Final with the team in June of 2009. Rallo moved on to play with the Texas Stars when the puck dropped the following October, and finished the season in mid-June once again in the Calder Cup Final. He stayed in Austin the following season playing in 78 games for the Stars and acquiring 54 points.
In July of 2011, the Florida Panthers signed Greg Rallo to a one-year, two-way contract. After attending training camp with the Panthers, he joined the San Antonio Rampage. Rallo finished the regular season this year as one of San Antonio’s top goal scorers racking up 22 goals during his 72 games in the silver and black. He nearly matched that number in the assists category picking up 20 assists last season as well. South Florida got to see Greg Rallo in action in mid-December when the 30-year-old made his NHL debut when the Panthers faced off against the Carolina Hurricanes. Although he didn’t record a point in Florida’s 3-2 overtime victory, he saw some ice time and recorded a shot on goal during his one game stint with the Panthers.
The Panthers re-signed Rallo shortly after the free agent frenzy began a few weeks ago on July 1st. His experience is something that he uses to make him the great player he is. Rallo will be a great veteran forward for the Rampage once again this season, and will also fit nicely into the Panthers line up if needed.
