The Atlanta Hawks have extended a training camp invitation to former Spurs swingman James Anderson.

According to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Anderson’s best hope is to impress  Hawks brass â€" including new general manager Danny Ferry â€" enough during camp to land a make-good deal for the season.

Anderson, 23, was limited by injury, lockout and an overall lack of opportunity in two seasons since the Spurs made him the 20th pick in the 2010 draft out of Oklahoma State. At the time, he was the Spurs’ highest-drafted rookie since Tim Duncan went first overall in 1997.

Rendered redundant on the roster after the emergence of third-year guard Danny Green, Anderson became a free agent in July, as the Spurs declined to pick up his third-year contract option.

The former Big 12 Player of the Year, Anderson saw his tenure with the Spurs cursed almost from the beginning. A hamstring injury kept him out of summer league in 2010, and a stress fracture in his right foot limited him to just 51 games as a rookie.

Anderson appeared in 26 games during a lockout-shortened sophomore campaign and shot a woeful 27.9 percent from 3-point range.
