Gregg Popovich has brought in a former Spurs Ime Udoka by his side while Utah Jazz assistant Scott Layden is one of the possible candidates for the vacant position

During the off-season, the San Antonio Spurs lost two assistant coaches and the search for suitable personal has been going on ever since. The Spurs management have been successful in completing half the job as Ime Udoka has been hired as an assistant under Gregg Popovich.

“Ime Udoka possesses an outstanding work ethic as well as a natural inclination to teach. We are excited to add someone with his potential to our coaching staff,” said Gregg Popovich after the hiring.

Udoka played was a Spurs for three years in his NBA career. During that time he featured in 160 games and held an average of 4.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. Other than playing for the Spurs, Udoka was part of several different organizations in his 7 year NBA career. He played for the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Sacramento Kings, and New Jersey Nets.

His best tenure however came with the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2006-2007 campaign during which he averaged 8.4 points and 3.7 points. He also spent some time playing in the D-League and has now taken a first step in the world of coaching.

Udoka’s arrival is however not the only new arrival in San Antonio’s coaching staff as the Spurs have requested to interview the Utah Jazz assistant coach Scott Layden. The Salt Lake City franchise has reportedly granted the Spurs request and Layden will be meeting with the San Antonio front office personal anytime soon.

Layden has a long history with the Jazz, a place where he has spent 25 years. During this time, he has worked under legendary coach Jerry Sloan and also has the experience of being an assistant to Phil Johnson.

He is currently one of the three assistant coaches present on the Jazz staff working with Tyrone Corbin. Sidney Lowe and Jeff Hornacek are the other assistant coaches present and if Layden makes his way over to San Antonio, it will leave Corbin’s staff very short handed for the coming season.
