(New Braunfels, TX) -- KGNB News has confirmed that the Texas Rangers are indeed taking over the investigation into whether signatures were forged on the petition to recall City Councilman Bryan Miranda. What started as one complaint has now turned into 6 sworn affidavits from residents in Dist. 5 that say their name is on the petition, even though they never signed such a document.
New Braunfels Police initially handled the early stages of that investigation, collecting data and verifying whether there was any merit to the initial claims. But investigators said from the beginning that if there were enough evidence to move forward with the investigation, then their work would be turned over to the Texas Rangers in order to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest.
And although itâs not necessarily a daily occurrence, City Secretary Patrick Aten tells KGNB that residents continue to come in to check that petition to see if their name is on it, which is their right, since it is a public document. Aten says anyone can come and view the petition by simply filling out a public information request, and if they want to take a copy of the petition with them, they can for 50-cents per page. In the meantime, the Texas Rangers did confirm with KGNB yesterday that they are taking over that investigation, but did not provide any details about their timeline, or any details about the course of their investigation. As details emerge in that ongoing case, stay tuned to KGNB News for updates.
